#28 for 8/20/10

What I actually did for yesterday
What I wanted to do for yesterday

Trace over a scanned sketch with the pen tool in Illustrator.  Color in Photoshop. Thrilling.

#26 for 8/18/10

I was laying down trying to figure out what to do for tonight's daily and I looking down decided to draw my feet.  A few of my friends from Highschool have named them monkey claws/feet, and so I feel like my feet are actually an acurate if not odd way of representing me.  Enjoy.

To Chelsea:  It's your favorite, hope you like it.

#25 for 8/17/10

For today I tried drawing myself (as much as the programs could allow me) in some beat making programs on the iphone.  I went through about four of them, some let me add in layers (like beatwave) so I could see how multiple images could affect sound, and others produced beats in compleately different ways like imitating a music box (iorgel).  In the end though I couldn not figure out a way to get the recorded sounds off the phone.  So the day's project seems to only be half complete.  It works out anyway, my face sounds aweful.

#24 for 8/16/10

The First, edited
The Rest, gathered w/ no editing

For today,  night time photogprahy.  You can see it slightly in the middle row of the second image, that I was trying to get multiple images and weird effects like that by leaving the shutter open.  I don't think it was open long enough to do what I wanted for those four images, and I never edited the last two images from row two together, but playing around was still fun.  I might involve light painting and/or other people in the future.  Another idea you will see again.

And as always let me know what you think of the project as a whole and the dailies, feedback helps the ideas flow.  Thanks for stopping by.

For today, a late night comic sketch of myself.  Some days self portraits don't make it into my day until I've pretty much run out of time to do them.

#22 for 8/14/10

As you can see we have another wire sculpture head, focused more on the eyes and nose and shape of the skull this time.  You'll see in the future what I have in store for these, you will see them again.

Yes, that is a blank photoshop canvas as the background for the images, and I apologize for my crude photographing technique.  I will eventually have a place set up to photograph work.  Until then, things will continue as they are.  I'm also starting to realize the downfall of the point and shoot since I can't control focus well/at all.  Oh well, work with what you got.

#21 for 8/13/10

For today, I did quick sketches of myself on found object bottles, and left them around for people to find.  Look for them in your neighborhood!

#20 for 8/12/10

Here are the three prints finally finished, all marked as AP (artist proof).  They are simple linocut prints, made up of contour lines with little to no (mostly no) shading.  I'll probably try to run off a small edition of these if people think they're interesting enough, otherwise I might not go back to them.

Here's a shot of the plates I used, I think they're 4x6".  I'm totally doing more of these now that I have ink to print with.

Here's a shot of the three together.  I really need to get a scanner or a set up to take pictures at.  The lighting is never good, and the bend to the prints in the first three images is because I ended up taking the pictures of them at an angle.  Things to work on.

I downloaded a new app today called Adobe Ideas.  Its a simple vector based draw program that saves all files as Adobe pdf's.  Meaning that all files made in the app are re-workable with Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.  It's a pretty sweet program.  So the bad news for you all is you get my sketches from early play time using Ideas.  Just trying more graffiti-esque self portraits.  Expect to see more of these "Ideas" in the future.  Tomorrow should be a bigger update, I finally picked up some printing ink.

#18 for 8/10/10

This is a series of images drawn in Illustrator of pictures of myself a friend of mine took, one of the times when she randomly uses my phone to take some of the weirdest and coolest pictures.  The way I drew the figure, trying to get the gesture of the body and especially the limbs is also kind of taken from her (though her drawings have a much more elegant feel and look to them).  Go check out her blog as well if you haven't see it already for those that know her:

Beautiful work.

#17 for 8/9/10

First off congratulations to the Jerretts who just got married in Baltimore today!  Good luck and health to you as you start a new life together.

And now for the rest of the story:
This is a snapshot of us at a pier at inner harbor in Baltimore.  While here we did not realize that at the same time Carpenter's car was being locked in for the night at the garage we were parked at.  Short version is we got locked out, had to find a place to stay, Ben provided his living room, and proceded to walk back the next morning to the garage at 6:00 am.
So after a long day, with not enough sleep, and very little time for art, I present to you an inside joke illustration of myself that maybe two people who read this will get  (unless more are reading it from that group than I thought).

So here's the (unfinished) drawing I did while we waited at the wedding for the ceremony to start.  I'll be finishing it later, since I'm still testing out the brushes app,  I'm thinking of where I should start dumping these sketches as they finish.  More to come tomorrow.

note:  Thanks Ben, we avoided sleeping on the streets or expensive hotel rooms thanks to you. Owe you.

myself/from memory
myself/from memory

Today I broke down and paid for an app on my phone.  The Brushes app is the best thing I could have found.  I've been debating for a while to download it, and I'm glad I did.  This is the piece I made while trying to figure out how to use it.  You see the under painting and the "finished" product.  Apparently Hockney and others have been using this app for  a while to be making art  (look it up, the stories on it and images are actually pretty cool, even a cover for the New Yorker).  I'm just glad to have a sketch book that's always on me by default.  You'll probably see more of these, though a brushes sketch blog could always happen.  It's a little cartoony, but hopefully I can do more with this later.  We'll see what tomorrow brings, Fred's getting married, so I don't know how much time I'll have.  I couldn't pick up ink again, and tomorrow isn't looking good either.

#15 for 8/7/10

So its a "speed paint" in photoshop for you today.  More like copy a photograph/paint by number, but some days I don't have a lot of time.  And yes, that is a scarf around my neck.

Today I tried to get block printing ink so I could finish the linocut portraits, but Micheal's was sold out, A.C. Moore doesn't sell it, and The Art Depot was closed by the time I got to it after the other two.  Needless to say, no luck today, though hopefully tomorrow, I'm looking forward to seeing how they print (and again I'm still counting this for a different day since I've yet to recarve them as well).  Lets see what tomorrow brings.

#14 for 8/6/10

detail/close up

A wire sculpture of my head, or what I got done of it.  Expect more wire in the future.  I like the material, I feel like i didn't do it justice this time.  Let me know what you think.

-MC

note:  I think I like it because I try to draw with that style/line quality
